For many years people have thought that IQ can predict job success. As it turns out there are many factors which must be in place for a person to be successful at their job. According to the Harvard Business Review there are three ways to identify high-potential employees: ability, social skills, and drive. One way of measuring cognitive ability and intelligence is through general mental ability (GMA).The concept of GMA was first devised in 1904 by Charles Spearman, a psychologist and statistician. Spearman noticed that children were receiving similar grades in unrelated school subjects; this lead Spearman to the idea that everyone has an underlying general mental ability (intelligence). Spearman believed that this GMA could be applied to all kinds of tasks. Psychologist Linda Gottfredson describes GMA as “the ability to deal with cognitive complexity.”
The next factor which is important for job success is social skills. While social skills are not considered in traditional IQ test in recent years it has become obvious to scientist that social skills are a type of intelligence. This type of intelligence is referred to as emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence refers to: 1. a person’s ability to understand their own emotions and to use them to guide their own behavior, and 2. to be able to understand the emotions of others, which allows for empathy and good interpersonal dynamics.
The final factor, drive or grit, refers to a person’s will, motivation, and desire to work hard and achieve goals, even when those goals may be hard to reach. Angela Duckworth, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, who won the MacArthur "genius" award in 2013, discusses the importance of grit. According to Duckworth grit is a combination of passion and perseverance; which in accordance with IQ allows one to persevere through hard tasks in order to better one’s self and learn new skills.
While the traditional concept of IQ is not the only factor that plays a role in job success, it turns out that the other components of success are related to non-traditional concepts of IQ. In the end one needs ability, social skills, and drive to really achieve success in their career.
